Racing Guide - Mountain Bike


Mountain Biking's traditional race season is throughout the spring, summer and into early autumn. Some venues also hold winter series races.

Where to start

As with all discplines of cycling, one of the best ways to learn a new area of cycling is to join a club who take part in that discpline. 

The South East has a number of excellent facilities, both natural and purpose-made to try mountain biking. Dedicated trail centres will have bikes available to hire as well as graded trails ranging from family paths, to highly technical black graded trails, and downhill runs.

Penshurst Off-Road Club (PORC), Penshurst, Kent, TN11 8DU
Downhill trail centre, with cross country routes. Bike hire available on site.

Surrey Hills, public access trails spread all over the Surrey Hills AONB. 
Bike hire available from a number of local shops.

Aston Hill, Hertfordshire (Central region), HP22 5NQ
Forestry Commission downhill trail centre, with cross country routes.

Lee Valley Velopark (Eastern Region), East London, E20 3AB
Purpose built trail centre. Bike hire available on site.

Swinley Forest, Bracknall (Central Region), RG12 7QW
Bracknall Forestry trial centre. Bike hire available from Swinley Bike Hub.

Cyclopark and Herne Hill Velodrome both run cyclo-cross/mountain bike holiday coaching sessions for U16s most school holidays, as well as other sessions advertised via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Local and Regional Race Series

Once riders have tested their basic skills on the trails, the next step is to enter a race.

Many Go-Ride clubs will run cyclo-cross/mountain bike Go-Ride Races for novice youth racers. Find them use the filters on the British Cycling calendar.

Essex Summer Evening Series (Eastern Region), Hadleigh Farm and Potash, South-East Essex. 
All ages. Tuesday evenings May-July.

Mud Sweat and Gears (Eastern Region), events across Eastern region. 
All ages, Sundays in summer.

Southern XC (Central Region), events across Central region. 
All ages, Sundays in summer.

Mountain biking uses its own age category system.

Throughout summer and autumn, British Cycling's Regional Performance Pathway team run the well-respected monthly circuit Regional School of Racing (RSR) sessions for under 16 riders. National Racing

Top riders should compete in the National Cross Country, MTB Downhill or Four Cross Series.

The regions top 4 boys and top 4 girls will be selected to represent the South East every September at the Inter-Regional/UK School games. Contact the team manager to be considered. Contact the team manager to be considered.

Top youth riders may be selected for the Olympic Development Apprentice (ODA) programme, the progression on from the RSR sessions on the GB Cycling Team Performance Pathway.
